On Wednesday 2 April, our College came to life with music, dance, and vibrant colours at our annual Celebration of Culture event.
The day was a great success, with many students proudly representing their heritages by wearing cultural attire and waving flags from around the world.

Andrew Stiffell, Students’ Union President commented: “The Celebration of Culture has been a tremendous success this year, we have truly provided an unforgettable experience for students.
“It was heartwarming to witness the students’ smiles, whether they were enjoying the delicious food, dancing to the performances, or being covered in colourful powder during the Holi Festival.
“I would like to recognise Megan, our Student Experience Officer, who has worked tirelessly to make this special day possible. Additionally, I express my gratitude to all College staff and Students’ Union members who contributed to bringing this event to life.”
The event featured a range of guest performances and interactive workshops. A steel pan drummer set the tone, whilst Latin, Nepalese, Salsa, and Bollywood dancers brought a lot of energy to the atrium. An African drumming workshop with Rich Rhythms also gave students a chance to try traditional rhythms for themselves, whilst Henna tattoos were on offer in the SU Lounge.

Lunchtime was a feast for all, with a variety of free cuisines available for students to try. Special thanks to Seoul Sarang, Ruzzo Italian Restaurant, The Smoking Drum and The Old School House Indian Restaurant for providing delicious dishes from different cultures, helping our students to broaden their palettes and try new things.

To close the day, eager staff and students took part in a lively Holi colour festival, a tradition originated in the Indian subcontinent. Celebrating the arrival of Spring, everyone ended the event covered in bright powders and big smiles.

Students spoke about the importance of events like this, sharing how they help bring the community together and promote understanding, with Early Years Student Ella Leach saying: “It’s very diverse event and it is nice seeing the adult performers sharing one other’s culture. We have enjoyed dancing and I’m really looking forward to the food!”
Ella Knight added: “Being an Early Years student, we work with children from different places so it’s important to understand different cultures. It’s been a wonderful experience.”

Responsible for distributing flag stickers to students, allowing them to celebrate their home countries, Ruby Soufizadeh wearing a beautiful Kamiz from her native country of Afghanistan and friend Millie Thorogood explained why they enjoy The Celebration of Culture. Millie told us: “There is such a nice atmosphere, and everyone is celebrating cultures from all over the world”
Ruby added: “It gets everyone involved and learning about the different cultures. I’m looking forward to the Bollywood dancer as last year it was really good and the food!”

Competition was fierce between friends Ryan and Seb during the Chopstick Challenge, in which they had to use the chopsticks to pick up different foods. The learners explained this was the first time they had ever used chopsticks!

When asked about what he has enjoyed about the day Ryan commented: “It is nice to celebrate different cultures. Today we get to see each other’s culture, different food, different vibe of the countries, it’s pretty cool.”
Events like this celebrate the diversity within our College community and create opportunities for students to learn about different cultures. By experiencing traditions, food, and performances from around the world, students can develop a greater appreciation for the backgrounds of their peers and build a stronger sense of unity and inclusion.

Commenting on the importance of such events, Joanna Brown, Assistant Principal explained: “Today saw the fourth Celebration of Culture event at Ashford College, which has become a day that students and staff alike look forward to every year.
“Today has been even bigger and better than ever, with the addition of our first Holi Fest celebration that was thoroughly enjoyed by lots of students and staff. It’s always so lovely to see students and staff wearing traditional clothing and dancing to the various music.”

Celebration of Culture Day has been a fantastic reminder of the diversity and unity within EKC Ashford College and the wider community.
